I swung by the machine room (and will need a further change of clothes, the area is absolutely soaked with rain, including flooding in my building). I rebooted, same problem. I rebooted in safe mode, and it worked. Note that BIOS indicates that there is a RAID Adaptec. I managed to enter its configuration utility, but had no idea what to do... I have never really understood what raid is, as Bab said it's tranparent to the O/S. I am really only working at that level and above.
Be extra careful with the machine...
