Again, I don't think that's the issue. It's a kernal problem. Now, come to think, when we updated, we did not reboot nekba? So we should have a new kernel now, maybe that will fix. I just got back from the UITS datacenter. Nebka was running with no obvious hardware problems, I couldn't see any warning lights or anything like that. I could log in at the local console, but once I entered my ID and password, the login process froze and nothing more would happen. I restarted the computer and once it came back up I was able to log in normally and can now get in via SSH. My rough guess would be that a bash process was frozen and had killed the shell entirely. That would explain why I couldn't get a prompt on local login and would also kill any number of network services that rely on shell scripting. That's just a guess though. A quick look at /var/log/messages does show a number of segfaults reported on the 29th, which may bear further investigation. Thank you so much for this report. I remebered that I could get authenticated, but it failed to create a terminal for the shell to run in. I had that problem with sahure a couple of times. In that case you can get in with ssh machine /bin/bash -i so that thee is no terminal created. I get this solution from some Cretian student web site. It saved me in the sahure problems. I tried it out on nebka and could not pass authentication. I then demissed my sanity and thought this may have been a fatamorgana. The mysql segfaults are an issue we know about. I will change the rsync_by_directory feeder of RePEc data to a standard rsync. This may be a trigger. Thanks again Tim! BTW, if you plan a w/e in the city my appartment is free all Summer.
