I just got back from the UITS datacenter. Nebka was running with no obvious hardware problems, I couldn't see any warning lights or anything like that. I could log in at the local console, but once I entered my ID and password, the login process froze and nothing more would happen.
I restarted the computer and once it came back up I was able to log in normally and can now get in via SSH.
My rough guess would be that a bash process was frozen and had killed the shell entirely. That would explain why I couldn't get a prompt on local login and would also kill any number of network services that rely on shell scripting.
That's just a guess though. A quick look at /var/log/messages does show a number of segfaults reported on the 29th, which may bear further investigation.
