We are in deep shit. It turns out not a single confirmation email got sent, as not a single one got confirmed.
I got plenty of confirmation email to the authors account. THe problem does not appear to be sending the emails.
It looks like I will be spending the whole day resending emails and fixing things, but I cannot touch the email configuration.
The RePEc Author Service is also overloaded with god knows what. I will also have to go through all processes there and see what they are doing.
On any of my services, I hold the crontab in etc/crontab. I must have activated that. If aras to nebka works differentyl, then the file etc/crontab should contain a note to that effect.
