Knowledge Exchange is a cooperative effort between four European organisations that support the use and development of Information and Communications Technologies infrastructure for higher education and research. The four partners are Denmark's Electronic Research Library (DEFF), the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) in the UK and the SURFfoundation in the Netherlands. The objectives of this meeting are: * to share knowledge and experience and to exchange views on desired developments * to identify priority issues for technology, service and policy development * to explore and stimulate interoperability and common approaches * to inform and support future planning - explore role KE can play The themes or perspectives we would like to discuss are Governance, Interoperability and Added Value. Governance What are the roles and responsibilities for international, national and university players, and researchers? How do we achieve sustainability; what business models are possible and acceptable? Interoperability How do particular solutions interoperate with other systems or infrastructures? What are issues regarding data exchange? How can trust between different providers/solutions be built? What are the major hurdles to be taken before achieving interoperability, and what are the consequences of not being interoperable? Added Value How do/can our current solution/systems improve the user experience? What processes/communities could benefit, what problems could be solved/what challenges met? What is needed to achieve these benefits? A general challenge in all three themes is to identify the gaps, the missing elements that prevent an optimal solution, that should be worked on. And how can existing national, not-for-profit and commercial author ID systems co-operate and strengthen each other? Participation Participants are invited from national and international organisations working on author identifiers. They are asked to consider any of the above perspectives in relation to the organisation or expertise they represent. You will be given the opportunity to present your position, perceived challenges and ambitions at the start of the workshop. This overview will help us all to understand the important issues regarding digital author identifiers. You will find a suggested programme for the workshop attached. With this event Knowledge Exchange hopes to be a catalyst stimulating integrated approaches towards transparent use of author identifiers. All who share this view are invited to join. affiliations percentage

Christian, Part 2 of the planned ACIS-RAS changes includes: > For multiple affiliations, let users specify percentages for > each. Support it in ReDIF profile export. I need a detailed description of this feature. How will it look and behave? In particular, i have the following questions: - would we allow entering any free number between 0 and 100? (as a text input field.) Or do we allow choice of only certain values, like 10, 20, 30, 40, etc? (as a drop-down select control) - do we ensure that the sum of the percentages equals exactly 100 or not? - what happens when a user removes an affiliations (with some percentage assigned to it)? - how do we treat a case of three equally-important affiliations? (33%? 33.33%? 30%?) - do we sort the affiliations in the order of decreasing percentage automatically? I can prepare mockups after you answer these questions. -ivan

RAS upgrade tomorrow, Dec 13 2011

Hi, In accord with what we have discussed previously, I want to and plan to do upgrade RAS to the recent ACIS version tomorrow. It is a good time for another round of testing of the version installed at http://ras.openlib.org/ -- if anyone is available. Specifically, it is very needed to test the new user registrations. I'm not sure anyone has tried that at all on this version. If anyone helps me with testing, and no blocker issues are found, i'll go on with the upgrade at about 9am UTC on Dev 13, which is about midnight time on nebka server. Basically, I'll wait for the end of the nightly script and start upgrade. I'll plan the upgrade in more detail now. -ivan

hi all, The upgrade went fine, so far. The new version of ACIS is online at http://authors.repec.org/ for approx. 4 hours now, and it seems to be running well. I've enabled automatic profile update in a limited mode (2 profiles per run, 4 profiles per hour). Initially, i've found a number of small glitches and have fixed them. I see lots of users coming in and modifying their profiles and leaving the site. I don't see any issues or errors so far. Update daemon seems to be working okay too. I'm still monitoring the logs and checking this and that, but it seems ok. -ivan

Christian & all, I've done testing of the automatic profile update, both research profile and citations, with some fixes. Today I've removed some pieces from the Christian's profile (by hand) and ran APU for him. This resulted in two mails sent. Christian, please check it. If things look good, i suggest to finally upgrade the production RAS system. -ivan

log rotate in /home/aras/opt on nebka

Would it be possible to archive log files by appending the archive date before filing instead of using log rotate? If the date is appended, the file never changes again and I can rsync the directory easily. If the files are archived with log rotate, over 3000 files in /home/aras/opt/oldlog get renamed and rsync has to copy every file each time.
